Frequently asked

Texas REALTOR® associations — how membership works

A plain guide to the local REALTOR® boards Texas agents join: which one to pick, what REALTOR® association dues in Texas actually cover, and whether you can belong to more than one.

What are the Texas REALTOR® associations?

Texas REALTOR® associations are the local boards a licensed agent joins to get MLS access and the right to use the REALTOR® trademark. There are dozens statewide, each covering its own service area — from HAR in Houston, the second-largest local board in the country, down to single-county boards like Laredo or Waco. Texas Ally is a member broker at 18 of them, which is what lets our agents choose whichever one fits their market.

Which board of REALTORS® should I join?

Join the one whose service area matches where you actually sell. The board owns or shares the MLS you will use every day, so coverage matters far more than dues: a Temple agent on the wrong MLS cannot pull comps for their own listings. If your business straddles two markets, joining a second board is normal and common. Texas Ally can sponsor you at any of the 18 boards we belong to, and at more than one if your territory calls for it.

Do I have to join a local REALTOR® board in Texas?

Not by law — your licence comes from TREC and does not require board membership. But in practice you cannot work residential resale without the MLS, and the MLS comes through the board. Membership is also what lets you call yourself a REALTOR®, which is a trademark rather than a synonym for agent. Texas Ally asks every agent to join a local board of their own choosing for exactly that reason.

What are REALTOR® association dues in Texas?

Dues are four separate line items, not one. Local board dues are set by each association and are the part that genuinely varies. Texas REALTORS® dues and national NAR dues are the same figures wherever you join, with the NAR portion carrying the Consumer Advertising Campaign assessment. MLS participation is billed separately, usually quarterly. Because only the local slice really differs, dues are rarely a good reason to pick one Texas board over another.

Can I belong to more than one Texas board of REALTORS®?

Yes, and plenty of working agents do — particularly along the Austin-to-San-Antonio corridor and around DFW, where markets overlap. You pay each board separately. Texas Ally is a member broker at 18 local REALTOR® boards, so multi-board setups are straightforward for our agents rather than an exception we have to negotiate.
